2006 Preakness Review
Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro broke through the
starting gate and was quickly gathered in
by Edgar Prado, but something was wrong and soon after the start of the
Preakness Barbaro was pulled up to the gasps of onlookers. The race
must go on and Like Now set the early pace, with Sweetnorthernsaint tight
on his outside flank and Brother Derek three wide in excellent stalking
position. Meanwhile Sweetnorthernsaint took the lead from Like Now,
and Bernardini launched a well timed and powerful rally to Brother Derek's
outside. Brother Derek began to fade and it was down to Bernardini
and Sweetnorthernsaint. Bernardini swooped by Sweetnorthernsaint
nearing the eighth pole and it was all over but the shouting.
Sweetnorthernsaint continued on for a clear second, and long shot
Hemingway's Key got up for third ahead of Brother Derek.
