Synopsis  Santa Anita Race 6

The San Rafael is a Grade 2 Stakes for three year-olds to be run at 1 mile on the dirt for a purse of $150,000.  The race is a showcase for two of the budding stars of the 2006 Kentucky Derby trail, Stevie Wonderboy and Brother Derek.  Stevie Wonderboy is sired by Stephen Got Even, a son of A. P. Indy.  On the dam side, his grandsire is Summer Squall.  These are royal bloodlines, to be sure.  As a three year-old, Wonderboy will develop nicely, and he is bred for distance, and he is bred to win.  I picked him second in the Breeders Cup Juvenile, and he did not let me down.  With Doug O'Neil handling him, and media icon Merv Griffin as owner, Stevie Wonderboy is in good hands. Stevie Wonderboy is certainly the best colt in the race, but he may be hampered by the one mile distance, as Wonderboy prefers to go longer.  The D. Hendricks trained Brother Derek, on the other hand, prefers the one mile distance, and he is going to be a handful for Wonderboy to run down in the stretch.  The presence of the B. Baffert trained Wanna Runner is critical to the chances of Stevie Wonderboy.  With excellent speed, the El Corredor gelding will give Brother Derek all he can handle on the front end, and this is a welcome development for Wonderboy, who needs to pass Brother Derek in the late going.  The San Rafael is essentially a match race between Stevie Wonderboy and Brother Derek, and Wonderboy gets the nod in a thrilling race.

Synopsis  Gulfstream Park Race 2

The 2nd at Gulfstream is a $10,000 claimer for older fillies & mares run at one mile on the dirt.  In claiming races the trainers able to saddle the soundest horses merit the best chance to win.  Most Charming is extremely well placed and her trainer H. Benson thought enough of her to reclaim her in August.  Most Charming possesses the most pure talent in the field and enjoys the services of rider R. Bejarano for the first time.  M. Guidry is aboard Halo Jamerica, Jamerica flashes early speed in most of her races and that will help her contend today.  Ms Touriffic is also suited to be a front runner if she is sent, and her inside post is a help.  Wekiva's Awesome is going to be flying late under J. Rose, and has a great opportunity to hit the board.  Irish Class gets an honorable mention.

Synopsis  Gulfstream Park Race 4

A very talented field of six young colts tries to clear second level allowance conditions. The competition is very evenly matched, but we can shed some light on the possible outcome.  Saint Daimon faced stakes competition in the Aventura exactly one week ago and finished a respectable 6th, Saint Daimon has already won a stakes, the Huntington at Aqueduct, so he is deserving of a long look today.  Tempering the optimistic outlook, though, Saint Daimon raced only seven days ago.  F. Gomez saddles Rehoboth, winner of two races at Calder, and owner of very respectable speed figures, Rehoboth merits a good look.  Tropical Play is two for two, both at Calder, and goes for his 3rd in a row with E. Castro aboard.  Fabled is one of the main players, having won both of his starts for N. Zito.  Fabled prefers to stalk from a distance and will need to stay in touch with the field today, Fabled has a great turn of foot and is well positioned to challenge for the win.  Express News showed promise at Keeneland but always sports front wraps, never a good sign.

Synopsis  Gulfstream Park Race 7

The 7th at Gulfstream is a $50,000 claimer for older horses run at one mile on the grass.  The trick to claiming races is to follow the trainers who specialize in making troubled horses become sound again, at least for one race.  J. Sheppard is a very patient handler who fits that description, and he saddles Forget the Judge today in his first race in 132 days, perfectly reasonable for a turf horse, Forget the Judge was jumping hurdles in the Spring of 2004, but won a claimer on the turf at Saratoga in September, and will fetch a good price.  J. R. Velazquez may have had a choice to ride either the successful Peace Emblem or the less successful Run the Light, and he selected Run the Light, this firms up Run the Light as a contender, and casts a shadow on the chances of Peace Emblem.  A. Dutrow saddles both Peace Emblem & Sabre Baby, and although both have a chance for the win, Sabre Chance with E. Prado aboard looks more poised for a good effort.  The Brazilian bred Prodigus is expertly handled by H. Pitts and is entered in a perfect spot, and should be a dominant factor in the outcome.  E. Castro is aboard Looks Good Junic, another pointed beautifully toward a strong effort today, having recently run in the tough Pete Axthelm Stakes.  Honorable mentions are Private Scandal, Handsome Smile, Hard Head and Gadget Man.

Synopsis  Gulfstream Park Race 8

This conditioned allowance sprint on the dirt for fillies three years and up is going to be run by fillies that were juveniles two weeks ago, so we look for late starters that look ready to clear conditions.  Smart N Pretty fits that description perfectly, well bred with two starts late in the 2004 campaign, winning her maiden at first asking and finishing second in her first attempt at clearing allowance conditions, handled by D. Romans & piloted by M. Guidry today.  Yachats also won at first asking for T. Pletcher, and J. R. Velazquez is back to ride her again, a minor concern is a 55 day layoff directly after the maiden victory, but Pletcher is doing little wrong these days.  On paper Diamond Spirit looks formidable with a second place finish in the Grade 3 Valley Storm in November 2004, but like Yachats she has not raced for 55 days, and it took her four tries to graduate the maiden ranks, still with A. Jerkens handling her & R. Berjarano riding her expect a significant effort.  Mutakaway is another filly that won at first asking, and F. Brothers sends her out after 57 days off, but with FTL (first time lasix) and a steady stream of works.  Beholden flew home at first asking in a fast time for trainer E. Harty with J. J. Castellano aboard, and promptly spent five months on the sidelines, she could be tough today but buyer beware.  Home Befor Midnite cannot be discounted, she has faced good competition at Calder in a variety of events, and gets J. Velez up for the third time.  Gleaming Elegance ought to run well for two important reasons, first she did not embarrass herself against Smart N Pretty in today's conditions, and second her trainer S. Asmussen is topflight.  Deserving of honorable mention are Woodbine invader Elusive Sugar and Reason to Rejoice.

Synopsis  Gulfstream Park Race 9

The Marshua's River, run on the turf course at 1 and 1/16 miles by older fillies & mares, is host to a rugged and mature group of grass specialists. It is highly competitive, and there is little to separate the best of the runners.  That said, let's look at the main players.  The New York bred mare On the Bus, winner of the Ticonderoga in October 2004, has competed well against others in this field, mostly in minor stakes, and Dale Romans is a topflight trainer, and he has acquired the services of a top rider, M. Guidry.  T. Albertrani, a high percentage trainer as well, sends out the French bred Sauvage after a seven month freshening, and suddenly J. Bailey agrees to ride her for the first time, a signal Sauvage is ready for a big effort.  A. Jerkens & J. R. Velazquez team up on the late running Irish bred Asti, and today Asti will finally get the fast pace she relishes, breaking from the outside Asti will close very late, and very fast.  Shug McGaughey trains La Reina, racing at the top of her game, but La Reina has been asked to run more often than is desirable, and she faces many with a similar front running style, a disadvantage today.  Brunilda may be a dark horse on the rail, Bridgmohan is riding very well, as one of the more versatile stalkers in the field Brunilda will utilize the rail to her advantage, look for a good effort at a price.  Dynamite Lass is the only four year-old in the field, but she ranks with her elders, having competed well against Melhor Ainda, one of the most promising young fillies.  Deserving of honorable mention are My Lordship, Malaysia and Natalie Beach.

Updated Synopsis Aqueduct Race 5

The 5th at the "Big A" is a $15,000 claimer for older horses that have less than two lifetime wins.   The pickin's are thin but there are a few good possibilities.  The lightly raced Shade the Cat finished a respectable 3rd at a higher claiming price, and his ability to relax in the early going and turn it on in the stretch is a perfect style for today's race, Shade the Cat will be a major factor. Raphaelite, on the other hand, will go for at least a piece of the lead, and with a strong rider (R. Dominguez) could hold on, and will only benefit from a sloppy track.  P J Sully is a modest talent at best, but E. Coa elects to ride him for the first time, a good sign.  On the Porch has had physical problems, but M. Hennig is handling him and he has a long string of works.  D. Galluscio saddles Successful Affair, and Successful Affair put it all together to run a strong second in similar conditions last out, a repeat performance puts him in the winner's circle, but a sloppy track hurts his chances.  Deserving of honorable mention are I'm All In and Start at Five.

Update
With the race day scratches of I'm All In & Successful Affair, and with a wet surface, Raphaelite becomes a monster on the lead, and Shade the Cat moves up as well.  Look for these two to dominate most of the running.

Synopsis  Aqueduct Race 6

Three year-old state bred maidens battle at 1 mile and 70 yards on the inner dirt course.  River Squire and Herbert T will both look to press the pace, and River Squire is going to be tough to wear down, particularly on a wet track.  The G. Contessa barn saddles Hassani, a contender with a late running style, but the wet track will hurt his chances.  D. Galluscio sends out the first time starter Raff and Tumble, and Raff and Tumble looks very well meant.  Firemist, trained by B. Levine, should continue to improve in this his third start, and will be a threat to take it all.  Speaking Out will show speed from the rail.

Updated Synopsis  Aqueduct Race 7

Older New York breds go 5 and 1/2 panels on the inner dirt course under allowance conditions.  One horse stands out amongst the rest, the R. Dutrow trained Malibu Move.  Malibu Move did not debut until very late in his three year-old campaign, so we know there must have been physical issues.  That said, his debut was very professional, running a clear 3rd against N.Y. maidens, and he followed it with a scintillating performance, defeating a group of  N.Y. maidens in gate to wire fashion, and winning in style.  Seventy days later Malibu Move returns to the track, boasting a solid line of very nice works.  He is hands down the top choice.  New York Cat, handled by B. Levine, competes very well at this level, and returned from a lengthy freshening in fine form to take a non-winners-of-two open company claimer , New York Cat deserves some support at the windows.  Token Dem will show good pace again for S. Lake, and has a chance should Malibu Move fail, and will enjoy the off going.  Deserving of honorable mention are Helene's Dream, Harry the Rock and P. J. Indy.

Update
With the race day scratche of P J Indy, the race is wide open for Malibu Move & Token Dem to control the pace, particularly on a wet surface.

Updated Synopsis  Aqueduct Race 8

The Affectionately is a Handicap for fillies & mares three years & up, run at 1 and 1/16 miles on the inner dirt course, with a purse of $65,000.  A field of six femme fatales will fight it out, with two forming an entry in the name of the Phipps Stable.  Both halves of the entry are trained by Shug McGaughey, Provincial being the more intriguing of the two.  The Affectionately is host to several speed burners, and the patient stalking style of Provincial stands in stark relief to the front running style of the others, she spends a lot of time on the sidelines but McGaughey has worked her steadily in preparation for this race, Provincial has competed with the likes of Stellar Jayne, and is going to be a factor in the outcome today.  The sharpest mare in the field is undoubtedly Bohemian Lady, trained by T. Pletcher & ridden by J. Santos,  Bohemian Lady just missed in the 1 and 1/4 mile Ladies Handicap here in December, she is multiple Graded Stakes placed, and today's distance of 1 & 1/16 miles suits her, as does the inner dirt course.  Bohemian Lady must deal with other front runners today, though, including Amazing Buy and After the Tone.  Amazing Buy won the Busher here last February for handler J. Pederson, and figures to press the pace.  After the Tone chased Bohemian Lady in the Ladies Handicap, finishing some three lengths back of that one, M. Hennig will have her ready but her best may not be good enough.  Another M. Hennig charge is Freeroll.  Freeroll, not unlike Provincial, sports a patient running style, although she needs the race of her life to capture the victory.

Update
With the race day scratches of Amazing Buy & Freeroll, the pace belongs to Bohemian Lady and After the Tone.  They will both benefit from the wet surface.

Synopsis  Santa Anita Race 3

Nine older fillies & mares vie for a $26,000 purse under starter allowance conditions, to be run at 1 and 1/8 miles on the grass.  Most of these have been languishing in mid to low level claiming affairs, and bring little to the table.  Top rider G. Gomez has elected to ride Song Sung Gold, a good sign, but Song Sung Gold has won only once in 16 starts, including 0 for 7 on the grass, but merits a long look in this very weak field. Silk Kerchief fits the profile more, with only four lifetime starts and early success in starter allowance races, but races on the grass for the first time, J. Fanning trains & A. Solis rides.  The Irish bred Little Caroline is bred to excel on the turf, and is showing signs of good racing form despite her lackluster record, she can win at a price.  The Cal bred Blowing Bartok is interesting, having returned from a 17 month absence to graduate the maiden claiming ranks in her second try back.  P. Gallagher is an expert handler, and saddles Janzig Moon for her grass debut, Janzig Moon has a real upside in this race.  Element K. is a threat off her recent second place finish in a conditioned allowance grass route for Cal breds.
