Synopsis  Gulfstream Park Race 6

Older fillies and mares sprint five furlongs on the grass under allowance conditions.  Tiger Fever is lightly raced but is fast becoming a five furlong turf specialist, with a 3rd place finish in a minor stakes at Monmouth in June. The question is how will a long seven month layoff effect Tiger Fever, Jeremy Rose is up & Tiger Fever sports a line of good works, so a big effort is expected.  Tropical Snow did her racing at United Arab Emirates early in 2005, and managed to break her maiden on the Saratoga turf in August, Tropical Snow has never gone less than a mile in the U.S. and that could be a problem.  Fashion for Sher won a maiden claimer at Calder on the dirt in the summer, and has not raced since, her entry in allowance conditions and a bullet on the workout line indicate she may perform well at a price.  Jerry Bailey rides List Price, a maiden allowance debut winner on the grass at 5 1/2 furlongs at Arlington Park in September.  After four months, List Price is finally ready for her second start, and Bailey's presence means her connections are serious about winning.  Amandine shows promise at this distance in starter allowance and claiming conditions, and merits a look.

Synopsis  Gulfstream Park Race 8

A full field of twelve older horses goes 1 mile on the grass under allowance conditions.  Spring House performed well against last year's three year-old crop in minor stakes, and is eligible to do well today.  Todd Pletcher saddles Clerpark and Danaslam, Clerpark having run well in conditioned allowance events and suited nicely to today's one mile distance.  Danaslam is lightly raced and has shown promise in Calder allowance & optional claiming races.  Electric Light sizzled in an optional claimer on the dirt, and Nick Zito tries to take advantage of some of that Nijinsky II blood on the dam side, in this the turf debut for Electric Light.  Bill Mott enters Lamor, a Brazilian bred in his second race on U.S. soil, his first being a nondescript finish in the Pete Axthelm, Lamor has a big upside.  Ecclesiastic has shown good promise in optional claimers and even in a few graded stakes, but is stuck in the far outside post, a big disadvantage in a race that begins practically on top of the turn.

Synopsis  Gulfstream Park Race 9

The First Lady Handicap is a grade 3 sprint for fillies & mares three years and up, all competing for a purse of $100,000.  There are several very fast fillies & mares in the field, and one of the fastest is Maddalena.  Handled by Todd Pletcher, Maddalena ran with Acey Deucey in the summer and has recorded some huge speed figures.  Of mild concern is a 97 day layoff, indicating Pletcher may be glad handling her, but I expect a big effort today from Maddalena.  Trickle of Gold recently failed in the La Brea at Santa Anita, but she simply dominated the competition at Laurel and Delaware in the summer and fall, and Trickle of Gold should rebound for a big effort today.  Ender's Sister has experienced wild ups & downs, winning by 19 lengths in a Keeneland open allowance event and then losing by 13 to Stellar Jayne in the Grade 2 Top Flight Handicap.  Ender's Sister appears to be in the mix today.  Wayne Catalano saddles Lunachick, fast becoming a dominant sprinter on the northern California stage, and Lunachick should make her presence felt today.  Smokey Glacken has recent graded stakes success but a 83 day layoff is a major concern.  Lilah races in perhaps her final start, and although she is racing well is probably not up to this level of competition.  This being a handicap race, weights are individually assigned to each filly & mare, and the weights stack up nicely for Maddalena, Ender's Sister and Lunachick.

Synopsis  Aqueduct Race 3

The third at the "Big A" is to be run at 1 mile & 70 yards on the inner dirt for three year-old New York breds under allowance conditions.  We've got a hot pace on our hands, and that always complicates issues.  Stolen Thunder aced state bred maidens and promptly finished third in the Damon Runyon, a stakes for New York breds, Stolen Thunder seems poised to run a big one and figures prominently in the outcome.  Challenging Stolen Thunder on the front end will be the speedy Psychotic Reaction, Philly Frenzy, and Prince Raffie from the rail.  On December 31 Psychotic Reaction and Philly Frenzy finished 2nd & 3rd, respectively, under today's allowance conditions, and both are lightly raced, well trained, and eligible to improve.  The most likely candidate to take advantage of a hot pace is Don't Tell Joey, 5th place finisher in the Damon Runyon, and fresh off a good performance in an optional claimer at Laurel.  The competition is going to be fierce in this event.

Synopsis  Aqueduct Race 7

Older horses go six panels on the inner dirt for a $45,000 purse under allowance conditions.  This is an absolutely wide open event with no clear cut choice.  The lightly raced Be Wild Again finished third in the Say Florida Sandy, a summer stakes for New York breds, and recently returned from a six month freshening by running a respectable 5th in a tough optional claimer.  Be Wild Again is very consistent and deserves respect. Crafty Player has been dominating $17,500 claimers, and tries to strike while the iron is hot, Alan Garcia is back to ride again.  Oz is a speed burner who cleared both levels of allowance conditions for state breds, leaving him eligible for today's unrestricted allowance conditions.  Oz has been off for 78 days for James Jerkens, a prevalent concern.  Another New York bred, Blue Sunday, flew through state bred allowance conditions, registering impressive speed figures, only to run into a brick wall in the Albany, a stakes for state breds.  Blue Sunday took nearly four months off after the Albany and returned to run a competent second in the optional claimer that also featured Be Wild Again.  Blue Sunday will garner a lot of support at the windows, but we have to wonder about his condition, Thomas Albertrani trains Blue Sunday and Mike Luzzi rides.

Synopsis  Aqueduct Race 8

Eight hopefuls try their luck in a grade 3 handicap for three year-olds and up, to be run at 1 and 1/16 miles on the inner dirt for a purse of $100,000.  We are looking a very good horse suited to the course & the pace of the race, and we start with the Todd Pletcher trained Colita.  Colita rallied wide to capture an optional claimer at Aqueduct in very good time last out, and sports a stalking style ideally suited for today's pace scenario.  The only real pace will come from Happy Hunting on the rail and Mr. Whitestone.  Colita collared the very same Mr. Whitestone in his optional claiming victory December 16.  Colita has a history of graded stakes success, and is a probable to finish no worse than second today.  Mr. Whitestone is a very fast sprinter trained by Richard Dutrow, and speed is going to be his main weapon today, but he must contend with Happy Hunter early.  Happy Hunter is handled by Shug McGaughey and is regally bred, with only 8 lifetime starts Happy Hunter is developing a signature front running style and has a chance today, Happy Hunter must repel the sprinter Mr. Whitestone and then hold off the stalker Colita, no easy proposition.  Another contender is Knox, last out a hand ridden winner of an optional claimer in exceptional time, and trained by the sizzling Gary Contessa.  Knox must contend with a difficult outside post.  Evening Attire continues to draw support but frankly is not the same gelding he used to be, and the relative lack of pacesetters will be his undoing today.

Synopsis  Aqueduct Race 9

The 9th at Aqueduct is to be contested on the inner dirt course at a distance of 1 mile & 70 yards by older state breds under allowance conditions.  The lightly raced Crop Buster returned from a 6 1/2 month layoff to run a lackluster 7th under today's conditions, but Crop Buster has shown good speed early in his career, Alan Garcia elects to ride again, and Crop Buster may score at a price.  Hard Iron is also lightly raced and failed to fire in the mud January 1 under today's conditions, however a rider switch to Eibar Coa is a signal a better performance is on the horizon.  Blutarsky is gifted with ample speed, and will take some beating on the front end today.  It cold be a scramble at the finish, but Crop Buster, Blutarsky and Hard Iron have a lot of positives.  Deserving of honorable mention are the improved Rodeo Runner, the late running Brave Sir Robin and the James Jerkens handled Semper Fi.

The American Beauty is a $50,000 stakes for older fillies & mares going six furlongs on the dirt.  Josh's Madelyn prefers seven furlongs to six furlongs but she is peaking now and it may not matter.  Josh's Madelyn captured the Pan Zareta at Louisiana Downs with a last to first move that inhaled the competition, she will try to follow a similar script today.  True Tails, trained by the injured Cole Norman, is a dead red speed burner with a great chance for the win, her only question mark is a 7 1/2 month layoff with only two published works.  More Moonlight is another speedster with a chance, we throw out her last, a turf route at Aqueduct.  Immune to Gloom will receive support at the windows, having experienced success at Delaware Park for Tim Ritchey.

Synopsis  Santa Anita Race 3

The third at Santa Anita is a maiden allowance event for three year-olds to be run at seven panels on the dirt.  In these races we look for excellent trainers and bullets on the workout line.  Sadler's Trick, Glory Pass, Latent Heat and Political Maneuver all qualify and this group of four has a good chance to produce the winner.  Political Maneuver deserves at least a share of favoritism after running willingly against the big talent Plagiarist under today's conditions.  Bullish Yield, also in today's field, ran a late closing third behind Political Maneuver in the same race and is certainly a major exotics threat.  Latent Heat ran a spirited second in his debut and merits respect as well.  Glory Pass ran well in a turf sprint, but is bred to run well on the dirt.  Sadler's Trick is a first time starter for Patrick Biancone.
