Synopsis  Oaklawn Park Race 7

The 7th at Oaklawn is a six panel dash for three year-olds to be run under allowance optional claiming conditions, awarding a purse of $33,000.  I hesitate to call anybody a standout in a field of recently turned three year-olds, but Groovy Luck really is one.  Ridden by the up and coming apprentice rider Cody Meche, Groovy Luck coasted to a victory 14 days ago under these same conditions, and who's going to stop him from repeating?  Maybe Ticklish Will, the runner-up to Groovy Luck January 14, but the rider of Ticklish Will needed binoculars to see the hind end of Groovy Luck in that one.  The only hope for the rest of the field is that Groovy Luck does not take to the footing on a sloppy track at Oaklawn Park. Fighting for a piece of the exacta will be Ticklish Will, Music School, Castles in the Sky, High Adventure, Grant County and Wild World.

Updated Synopsis
Santa Anita Park Race 4

The Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Sprint Stakes is a six furlong dash for fillies & mares four year-olds and up bred in California or Florida, to be contested for a purse of $300,000.  Several of these talented fillies & mares have spent a great deal of time on the sidelines, only to return to big time racing.  The Cal-bred Western Hemisphere is a prime example, this her 4th start after a 13 month layoff, and in her last she won the Kalookan Queen Handicap with a 104 Beyer figure, ridden out to the wire.  Trained by Bob Baffert, Western Hemisphere has only 12 lifetime starts, 6 were on the dirt, but the five year-old mare is racing extremely well.  The Cal-bred Alphabet Kisses, another top talent, returned from a 4 month layoff to run 3rd in an open allowance sprint, and that should serve her well as a prep for today's race.  Alphabet Kisses is a winner of a Grade 2 stakes and several Cal-bred stakes, and she is again a major threat although there is some uncertainty concerning her present condition.  The four year-old Cal-bred Leave Me Alone fought tooth and nail with several of the top three year-olds in the country in 2005, and she captured the Grade 1 Test at Saratoga in the process.  More recently, she ran a determined 2nd in the Grade 1 La Brea behind runaway winner Pussycat Doll.  Today look for another top effort from Leave Me Alone.  Deserving of honorable mention are Cal-breds Thrilling Victory and Aclevershadeofjade and Fla-breds Hot Storm and Double D Appeal.

Update
The late scratches of Alphabet Kisses and Leave Me Alone open the door for Western Hemisphere to control the outcome.

Synopsis  Gulfstream Park Race 3

Four year-olds and up go a mile and sixteenth on the grass, racing for a claiming tag of $25,000.  Heading up a rag tag group of grass specialists is the Fla-bred Amon, trained by Wayne Catalano and ridden by J R Velazquez.  Amon has experienced considerable success in Illinois in claiming events on the grass, and frankly has no excuses in this field.  Quiet Ruler, with over $390,000 of winnings on the turf, was once a force to be reckoned with, now trainer Richard Dutrow tries to coax another win out of him, but Quiet Ruler has not won a race in over a year and a half.  On the positive side, the class drop and the weak field gives Quiet Ruler a real chance today, with Raphael Bejarano up.  Art Variety is a real sleeper, having experienced success in graded stakes events not all that long ago.  Art Variety won a $40,000 claiming race on the grass at Arlington Park in June of 2005, and Thomas Tomillo has him placed perfectly in this Gulfstream Park claiming race.  Frankie Brothers trains Vive La Vie, a reasonable claimer with tactical speed on the grass.  Other contenders include Love Your Whit, Rahy Rythm, Big Luck and Fit Faze.

Synopsis  Gulfstream Park Race 6

The Sunshine Millions Padua Stables Sprint is a six furlong dash for four year-olds and up bred in California or Florida, all competing for a purse of $300,000.  There are several very fast horses in the field, and one of the fastest is Cal-bred Areyoutalkintome, with J R Velazquez up.  Handled by Doug O'Neil, Areyoutalkintome has competed with Gregs Gold and Battle Won, and recently ran third in the On Trust Handicap, less than one length beaten by Proud Tower Too.  Also trained by Doug O'Neil is the speedy Cal-bred Thor's Echo, ridden by Jerry Bailey for the first and last time today.  Thor's Echo only recently turned four years old, but has competed well against Scrappy T and Proud Tower Too, as well as Areyoutalkintome.  The Cal-bred Red Warrior is one of the more intriguing horses in the race, a dead closer in sprints, with every reason to expect an ideal set of fractions to take aim at today.  Red Warrior used his "last to first" style to defeat Areyoutalkintome at six furlongs in January, although Areyoutalkintome is a much improved horse in 2006.  Red Warrior is very fresh, and having been well prepped in the El Canejo Handicap, will be mowing them down in deep stretch.  The lightly raced Cal-bred Bordonaro, recent winner of the V O Underwood, is another flyer worthy of mention.  The Fla-bred Mister Fotis is occasionally brilliant, but Martin Wolfson's charge is better suited to Calder stakes events.  Deserving of honorable mention are Fla-breds Nightmare Affair and Smokeume.

Synopsis  Gulfstream Park Race 7

The Sunshine Millions Ocala Stud Oaks is a six furlong race for three year-old fillies bred in California or Florida, competing for a purse of $250,000.  Several big name trainers, including Bobby Frankel, Allen Jerkens, Daniel Vella, Mark Hennig and Dale Romans saddle fillies for this one.  All these fillies were juveniles less than one month ago, so they are all lightly raced and still developing, and that is why I took the time to mention the most important trainers, because the trainers hold the key in this one.  Fla-bred Peach Flambe, trained by Hennig, simply exploded in her 3rd overall start, a state-bred stakes at Calder, destroying the field with a nice speed figure, and she will be in the thick of it today.  Big things are expected from Fla-bred Knights Templar, trained by Vella, after dominating her division at Woodbine in Canada.  Knights Templar managed a reasonable 6th place finish in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies, and she should run a good race today.  Bobby Frankel enters Cal-bred Windy in this the 4th start of her career.  Windy's seemingly lackluster performance in the Cal-bred Breeders Cup Challenge was hampered by an awkward start, and with a better break she may score at a price today.  Fla-bred Joint Effort has already logged eight starts, and her campaign does not suggest she will succeed today, but her trainer is Dale Romans and we consider her for the exotics on that count alone.  Deserving of honorable mention are Fla-breds Bettarun Fast, Fifth Avenue and Bully Jones, and Cal-bred Devons Smokin.

Synopsis  Gulfstream Park Race 8

The Sunshine Millions Ocala Breeders Sales Distaff is a $500,000 stakes for older fillies & mares bred in California or Florida, to be run at a mile and an eighth on the dirt.  The distance is going to be the key today, because field is fairly evenly matched but essentially untested at the 1 1/8 mile distance.  Bobby Frankel sends out the Fla-bred Sweet Lips, recently finishing 6th in the Stage Door Betty after a 9 1/2 month layoff.  With only 12 lifetime starts there is justification to worry about the long layoff, but I believe Frankel was taking his time with this talented lass, and I saw all I needed to see in the Stage Door Betty.  After a sluggish start, and without showing a lot of interest,  Sweet Lips made up a lot of ground to get within four lengths of the fully extended winner.  Today Sweet Lips will be able to lay off the pace, and with the effort we expect from her, will be awfully tough down the lane.  Her main competition is going to be Cal-bred Dream of Summer, a classy mare with multiple graded stakes placings.  At a mile and sixteenth or less Dream of Summer is pretty deadly, and she will be a handful at a mile and an eighth, but vulnerable nonetheless.  Cal-bred House of Fortune is a successful Ron McAnally reclamation project, and a reasonable threat today, although probably not a winner.  Deserving of honorable mention are Fla-breds Special Report and Pitanga and Cal-bred Secret Corsage.

Synopsis  Gulfstream Park Race 9

The Sunshine Millions Cloverleaf Farms Turf is a $500,000 stakes for older horses bred in California or Florida, to be run at a mile and an eighth on the grass.  The competition is very well balanced and talented, starting with the Bill Mott trained Fla-bred Silver Tree, Jerry Bailey up.  Winner of the Tropical Turf Handicap at Calder in December, Silver Tree is poised to deliver a fine performance today, and his past efforts against top U.S. turfers Artie Schiller and Leroidsanimux provide further support.  Willow O Wisp is one of the up and coming talents in the field, having run most recently in the Group 1 Hong Kong Cup, finishing 9th but only 4 1/4 lengths off the winner.  With only 13 overall starts, the four year-old Fla-bred gelding has recorded three graded stakes victories on the grass in California already, Willow O Wisp is to be feared.  Todd Pletcher enters the consistent yet unspectacular Fla-bred Icy Atlantic, and with J R Velazquez up and Pletcher training he is a reasonable threat.  Of the two Jeff Mullins entries, Fla-breds Eastern Sand and Captain Squire, I like Eastern Sand, already multiple graded stakes placed with only 15 lifetime starts.  Getting honorable mention are Fla-breds Gin and Sin and Touched by Madness, both exotics possibilities.

The Paumonok Handicap is a six furlong sprint for three year-olds and up, contested for a purse of $65,000.  Most of these have raced against each other at one time or another, so we have a good idea how today's race will set up.  Banjo Picker and Spooky Mulder are threats by virtue of their great early speed.  Todd Pletcher enters Bishop Court Hill, a major danger from just off the pace.  Redskin Warrior and Wild Jam will be gaining in the stretch.  All in all, we've got a close race on our hands.

The 2nd at Oaklawn is a 6 furlong sprint for fillies & mares four year-olds and up to be run under allowance conditions.  The field is short with only six contestants, and it is fairly weak for allowance conditions.  The top candidates for the win are D Fine Okie, Humboldt Belle and Lady Carmen. Lady Carmen has experienced mild success in minor stakes at Lone Star and Retama for trainer Steve Asmussen, and she fits in this group.  D Fine Okie is 3 for 4 on the dirt, all at Remington Park in Oklahoma, and is a threat from the Donnie Von Hemel barn.  Humboldt Belle is handled by Tom Amoss and is fresh off a victory in first level allowance conditions at Louisiana Downs.  Today's winner will be one of these three.  Dimple Pinch is a mild threat on back class but probably needs a race or two.

Synopsis  Oaklawn Park Race 9

The Dixie Belle Stakes is a six furlong sprint for three year-old fillies, contested for a purse of $50,000.  These lassies may have some surprises up their sleeves, as their style & talent level remain in flux.  A top trainer is always a good indicator, though, and Steve Asmussen & Cole Norman are two of the best at any Oaklawn meet.  Norman enters Love the Beach, runaway winner of the Lady Razorback Futurity at Louisiana Downs.  Love the Beach has been on the sidelines for 121 days since the futurity, sounding the faintest of alarms, but we trust Cole Norman and give Love the Beach a big shot today.  Steve Asmussen enters Lunargal and Shimmering Sunset, Lunargal the winner of the Serena's Song at Zia Park in New Mexico.  Lunargal took five swings before connecting for a home run at the maiden allowance level, a concern when trying to step up in class.  Shimmering Sunset is more interesting, defeating New Hope Seven (also in today's field) in an optional claimer, the third lifetime start for Shimmering Sunset.  Tom Amoss trains the aforementioned New Hope Seven, who has a pretty good shot today as well.  The Oklahoma-bred Jazzy Okie has done everything asked of her, and looks good for the exotics.  Gasia, with only three lifetime starts, is promising and may fetch a price.
