The Sumter is run at one and one-sixteenth
miles on the main course for 3-year-olds and up to be contested for a purse of $45,000.
Whos Crying Now should come up big in a weak Sumter field. Whos
Crying Now was soundly beaten by Bandini in the Grade 3 Skip Away at
Keeneland but put forth a reasonable effort and we can safely throw
out the Skip Away. Whos Crying Now has competed well against
Harlington, Lava Man, and Andromedas Hero. He is also the only
graded stakes placed horse in the field. Case closed. For
the exacta, we look to Siphon City, a hard hitting optional claimer
type who should run well today. Notgonagetmetoday is another in
the same vein, and despite a front running style may be good enough to
hold on for second. Paso Real is wild card, a Venezuelan import
sporting a line of nice works for Jose Garoffalo.

The 8th at Pimlico is a five and one-half panel dash on the main
course for 3-year-olds to be run under first-level allowance
conditions for a purse of $32,000. Little Vicar is always there
at the finish and will be again today but has trouble closing the
deal. Michael Pino enters Cucina Nick fresh off his
Oaklawn Park campaign and Cucina Nick will be closing fast late.
The pace is going to be sizzling courtesy of Kid Numerator, Tommie's Star,
Claim Me Please, All Show No Go, and Dancingonthegreen. Along
with Cucina Nick, Valid Brush will benefit from all this
pace. Top handler Richard Small handles Valid Brush, and Valid Brush
followed up a runaway maiden claiming win at today's distance with a
fast closing third in the Maryland Stallion Stakes here at Pimlico
April 22. Valid Brush may be cutting it close at 5
½ furlongs, but he is the choice.

Synopsis Churchill Downs Race 5 |
| The Grade 2 Churchill Downs Handicap is a seven furlong sprint on the main
course for
4-years-old and up to be contested under handicap conditions
for a purse of $200,000. Charging Indian is a rising star, fresh
off a romp over the more accomplished Battle Won in a Keeneland
allowance sprint. Battle Won is out for revenge today, and with
Bejarano up he just may get it. Battle Won was a major star in
his division last year with seconds in the Grade 1 Forego (Saratoga)
and Grade 1 Bing Crosby (Del Mar) and Battle Won will be a handful
today. Todd Pletcher saddles Vicarage and Garrett Gomez is up,
but Vicarage seems a cut below the top two. Tricky Trevor will
keep Charging Indian honest early but has little chance for the win.
A sleeper in here is Dreamsandvisions, fourth in the King Cotton (Oaklawn
Park) behind Beaus Town, and third in the Kenner (Louisiana Downs)
behind Rodeos Castle.
Dreamsandvisions is going to like the distance and
should the pace melt down he becomes dangerous.

Synopsis Churchill Downs Race 6 |
| The La Troienne is a seven and one-half
furlong event on the main course for
3-year-old fillies and will be contested for a purse of $100,000.
Adieu returns to the track after six months on the sidelines and
she is hands down the most talented filly in the field. Todd
Pletcher has the multiple graded stakes winner working forwardly for
her return, and there is no Folklore or Wild fit in today's field for
Adieu to worry about. She has to overcome the inevitable rust,
but with rider Bejarano and handler Pletcher in her corner she will be
ready to deliver a fine performance. Dale Romans saddles Smart N
Pretty and should Adieu fail Smart N Pretty is a viable alternative.
Her best stakes finish is a third in the Grade 3 Old Hat at Gulfstream
Park but she is on the improve to be sure. Wallace Dollase
brought Sweet Belle to Kentucky all the way from the west coast, and
she loved the track in her only start here. |

Synopsis Churchill Downs Race 7 |
| The Grade 3 Distaff Turf is run at one mile on the turf course for
fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up and will be contested under handicap
conditions for a purse
of $100,000. Wend is generally bankable in one mile stakes but
the problem is the bank doesn't pay much interest for an investment in
Wend. We'll look to Mirabilis and Marchonin for a better rate.
Mirabilis is handled by Bobby Frankel and ran well against Wend in the
Jenny Wiley, finishing third beaten 2 ½
lengths by Wend. Mirabilis has competed well against the likes
of Divine Proportions and Gorella in Europe and that is as good as it
gets for a filly or mare. The anticipated soft ground could
mitigate the distance advantage for Wend, and Mirabilis might just
catch her. Marchonin is quietly improving with every race under
the expert care of Michael Matz (trainer of Derby contender Barbaro)
and could hit the board at a price. Lock And Key is yet
another superior talent in the race, but must overcome a cross country
trip from California and only two races on American soil. Still,
she can hit the board. Todd Pletcher saddles Ready's Gal, a
moderate threat in this field. Special Grayce
offers good value with patient rider Bejarano and talented trainer
Helen Pitts. |

Synopsis Churchill Downs Race 8 |
| The Humana Distaff is a seven furlong sprint on the main
course for fillies and mares 4-year-olds and up to be contested under
handicap conditions for a purse of
$250,000. What Splendid Blended lacks in experience she
compensates for with brilliant talent. In a Shirley Jones
Breeders Cup Handicap void of pace, Splendid Blended altered her
natural stalking style and vied for the lead early, pulling off
to a scintillating victory in 121 and 3/5 for the seven panels at Gulfstream Park. Edgar Prado is back aboard the multiple grade 1
winner and Spendid Blended is going to be tough to beat. If
anyone can beat her it may be Pussycat Doll (Bob Baffert), winner of
the grade 1 La Brea at today's distance at Santa Anita. Pussycat
Doll has not raced since February 12 but sports an impressive line of
bullets in preparation for today's race. Behaving Badly (Bob
Baffert) is a threat to go gate to wire but I believe the field is too
deep to let her get away with the theft. Baffert is loaded to
bare in this one, and Behaving Badly and Pussycat Doll could run
one-two for him. Leave Me Alone is a talented stalker but she is
in the wrong race today, and Bending Strings could close for a piece
at a nice price. As far as the handicap weight assignments go,
Behaving Badly is high weight at 122 pounds, giving away 3 pounds to
Pussycat Doll and Splendid Blended.

Synopsis Churchill Downs Race 9 |
| The Grade 1 Woodford Reserve is run at one and
one-eighth miles on the turf course for 3-year-olds and up for a purse
of $400,000. Gorella is a freak of nature on grass, just an
absolutely amazing talent, having fought tooth and nail with the great
miler Starcraft (a male) and the champion filly Divine Proportions.
She gets the hot rider Leparoux, and the Frenchman jockey and
French-bred filly should form a perfect marriage.
As a filly, Gorella gets in at 117 pounds, an advantage
she gets today but really doesn't need.
The Irish-bred
Cacique has the best chance to defeat Gorella, having raced against
Valixir and Sulamani in France. In his U. S. debut for handler
Bobby Frankel, Cacique moved from 9th to 4th in a blink of an eye in
the grade 1 Kilroe and simply ran out of ground. The best of
American based runners are Milk It Mick (winner of the Kilroe) ,
Silver Tree (Jerry Bailey's last ride, finishing 2nd), and English
Channel, but I believe the European invaders will have the last word.
Milk It Mick actually began his career in England but this will be his
fourth race on American soil.

Synopsis Churchill Downs Race 10 |
| The Grade 1 Kentucky Derby is run at one and one-quarter
miles on the main course for 3-year-olds for a purse of $2,000,000
added.
All runners in the Derby will carry 126 pounds, a few pounds more than
they have ever carried before. This could hurt the front runners
on a small scale. Lawyer Ron is the best suited of the front-runners to survive what
could become a suicidal pace involving Sharp Humor and Sinister
Minister, not to mention a host of speedy stalkers including Keyed
Entry, Brother Derek, Sweetnorthernsaint, Showing Up, A. P. Warrior,
Bob And John, Barbaro, Private Vow, Bluegrass Cat, Deputy Glitters,
and finally Flashy Bull. A moist surface would be a plus for
most of these front-runners and stalkers, particularly Barbaro.
Point Determined would have to be considered a "deep stalker," not a
stalker and not a closer but something in between, and he is peaking
at the perfect time for Bob Baffert. The best of the closers are
Steppenwolfer and Jazil and either could win if the pace melts down (a
good possibility) and they avoid too much traffic congestion (a tough
proposition). Bottom line, Steppenwolfer, Lawyer Ron, Point Determined, Brother Derek,
and Jazil are the top 5 picks. |

Synopsis Churchill Downs Race 11 |
| The 11th at Churchill Downs is a six and one-half furlong sprint on the main
course for 3-year-olds and up to be run under second-level allowance conditions for a purse of $58,000.
Still eligible for second-level allowance conditions, Likely was the
runaway winner of the Lafayette Stakes at Keeneland in only his second lifetime start. A son of Yes
It's True, Likely is built for speed and has to be considered the main
threat despite his relative lack of experience. Likely was
awarded a Beyer of 110 for his Lafayette win, and gets a 5 pound break
today for his hot apprentice rider Leparoux. Lifestyle, on the
other hand, has plenty of experience (9 starts) and has exceeded the
100 Beyer plateau 5 times already. What I don't like about
Lifestyle is that he has remained eligible for second-level allowance
conditions for so long. British Attitude showed a lot of promise
in his 2-year-old campaign but has not raced since July 2005.
Still, Dale Romans looks to have British Attitude strong and ready for
a big race today. Yes Yes Yes, another son of Yes It's True, hails from the powerful Pletcher
barn and merits a long look. |

Big Lover |
| The 9th at Calder is a one mile and 70 yard route on the main
course for 3-year-olds to be run under non-winners-of-two allowance conditions for
a purse of $26,000. Big Lover availed himself nicely against the
talented Strong Contender and Derby hopeful Storm Treasure in a
first-level allowance at Gulfstream Park in February, finishing third
just five lengths behind the winner Strong Contender. He is
still eligible for non-winners-of-two only because he has been facing
the likes of Showing Up, Barbaro, Strong Contender, Storm Treasure,
and Electrify. My only concerns with Big Lover are a tough 2006
campaign and those ever present front wraps, but he must be considered
the choice. B B's Concert will be gunning on the front end and
is a logical alternative should the big favorite come up short.
Steve Towne saddles Dock, another with tactical speed, and a refugee
from the Todd Pletcher barn. |

Whos Cry | |
