 Synopsis  Calder Race 12

The New York, New York Stakes is a one and one-half mile marathon on the main course for 3-year-olds and up to be contested for a purse of $45,000.  The conditions of the New York, New York read more like a second-level allowance race than a stakes, and that leaves the door open for A. J. Melini to handle this short field of six.  A. J. Melini recently dominated Hopefortheroses and Stars Of Silver here at Calder in a stakes event and today he should do the same.  The only difference is that the distance is longer by 5/16 of a mile but that plays into the hands of A. J. Melini.  A son of Matty G, A. J. Melini is bred to enjoy the classic distances.  Ed Plesa trains and A. Castellano, Jr. gets the mount.  We don't expect a great price, but we expect to win.

Synopsis  Arlington Park Race 4

The 4th at Arlington is a seven panel sprint on the main course for 3-year-olds and up to be contested under non-winners-of-two claiming ($25,000 tag) conditions for a purse of $16,000.   Wayne Catalano enters Engineering Marvel, a son of Halo's Image, and he is the horse to beat.  Lightly raced, Engineering Marvel followed up a maiden victory with an excellent third in optional claiming conditions, and even though the field was short (5) Engineering Marvel served notice he is on the improve.  All The Facts draws the rail, and All The Facts is fresh off a big maiden win for a $20,000 tag and he will appreciate the trip from the rail.  Flying Cayman will be prominent throughout, exhibiting his superior speed, and is a prime exotics threat.  Flight Ready and Cope With Honor are exotics threats who will be closing on the field late in the race.

The 7th at Arlington is a six furlong sprint on the main course for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up foaled in Illinois to be contested under first level allowance conditions for a purse of $29,000.  Hot Shades was disappointing as favorite under similar conditions last out, but Christine Janks will no doubt have her ready to rebound.  Expect a big effort from Hot Shades.  Exclusive Secret just broke her maiden in fine fashion and she will be prominent throughout.  Cartiac Bypass and Storm Rolling In are viable exotics threats.

Synopsis  Belmont Park  Race 5

The 5th at Belmont Park is a six furlong sprint on the main course for 3-year-olds and up to be contested under allowance optional claiming conditions for a purse of $45,000.  Godophin Stables enters Afrashad who has not raced in nearly two years since a successful debut in a dirt sprint in Lingfield (Great Britain).  Afrashad sports a line of very impressive works for trainer bin Suroor Saeed and this is a good spot for Afrashad to return to the races.  Cool Springs Saint has enjoyed a modicum of success for trainer Bruce Levine and also returns from a layoff (seven months).  Saratoga Jet will show pace today but probably cannot hold on in deep stretch.  Mayo Post will be making his customary late run.

Synopsis  Belmont Park  Race 6

The Grade 2 True North Handicap is a six furlong sprint on the main course for 3-year-olds and up to be contested under handicap conditions for a purse of $200,000.   Tiger could well be the best sprinter in the country barring Lost In the Fog.  Tiger ran away from the competition in the Bold Ruler here at Belmont May 13 and earned a Beyer of 110 in setting fractions of 55 and 4/5 and 108 and 2/5.  This followed another 108 and 2/5 time, earned this time at Aqueduct in a six furlong allowance optional claimer in April (Beyer 111).  Tiger has plenty of competition today in the True North.  Anew is registering fast times, too, and he defeated Tiger in March, although that was before Tiger began destroying the competition.  Spanish Chestnut, third place finisher in the B. C. Commonwealth at Keeneland behind Sun King and Kazoo, will relish the six furlong distance and should be flying down the lane late.  Vicarage is a hard knocker for Todd Pletcher but today he may be in over his head.  Celtic Innis and Uncle Camie are trifecta possibilities.

Synopsis  Belmont Park  Race 7

The Grade 2 Just A Game Handicap is a one mile event on the Widener (outer) turf course for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up to be contested under handicap conditions for a purse of $300,000.  The Just A Game is host to a classic showdown between the best of the U. S. distaff grass milers and the best of the European milers.  Gorella, the 4-year-old French filly who finished 3rd in the Breeders Cup Mile against the boys, finishing less than a length to the worse of Artie Schiller and Leroidesanimeaux, is the best talent in the Just A Game.  Gorella recently finished 5th in the Churchill Downs Turf Classic against the boys once again, beaten less than two lengths by English Channel and Cacique, and Gorella registered a 104 Beyer in the process.  Gorella will be flying late in the Just A Game and the only chance to beat her is to get the jump on her.  That will be the strategy of the American turf runners Wend and Pommes Frites.  Each has peaked at the 100 Beyer mark, but each was fully extended in doing so, and the pace of the Just A Game is probably going to be quicker than Wend or Pommes Frites will prefer.  This will set up Gorella's late kick, and it could be lights out at that point.  An honorable mention is Mirabilis, a Bobby Frankel trained European import who is talented but a step behind the top runners today.  Also deserving mention is Ozone Bere, a French import trained by Christophe Clement, a rapidly improving filly who has raced against excellent European competition.

Synopsis  Belmont Park  Race 8

The Grade 2 Woody Stephens B. C. is a seven panel sprint the main course for 3-year-olds to be contested for a purse of $250,000.   An outstanding field gathers for the Woody Stephens, including Too Much Bling and Songster, the one-two finishers of the Bay Shore at Aqueduct.  Too Much Bling was credited with a 113 Beyer in the Bay Shore and is at the top of his game now.  He'll need to be to fend off Songster again, because Songster posted a 107 Beyer in the Hirsch Jacobs at Pimlico on the Preakness undercard. To make matters more complicated, Keyed Entry returns from his Kentucky Derby debacle to turn things around today.  Keyed Entry, you will remember, defeated First Samurai in the Hutcheson and finished second to Like Now in the Gotham.  Keyed Entry will probably be the second betting choice to Too Much Bling.  The speedy Noonmark, runner-up to Sharp Humor in the Swale, also runs in the Woody Stephens today and merits respect.  Honorable mentions include Doc Cheney, runner-up to Preakness winner Bernardini in the Withers, and Likely, an up-and-coming sprinter handled by Patrick Biancone.

Synopsis  Belmont Park  Race 9

The Grade 1 Acorn is a one-turn mile on the main course for 3-year-old fillies to be contested for a purse of $250,000.  Many of the best of the 3-year-old filly crop have gathered at Belmont for the Acorn today.  Adieu has to be considered the headliner off her brilliant juvenile campaign which included a victory in the Spinaway over juvenile champion filly Folklore.  Adieu returned from a six month freshening (following her 7th place finish in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Filly) to run second to Joint Effort in the La Troien at Churchill.  The rust should be off the wheels now and Adieu is set to run well today.  Teammate returns to the track after 3 months off following an outstanding win in the Bonnie Miss at Gulfstream.  Allen Jerkens scratched Teammate from scheduled races on at least one occasion since the Bonnie Miss so there is mild concern as to her fitness, but if she is ready she is going to be a handful for the others.  Miraculous Miss is in fine form but she will need the best race of her life to take the Acorn.  An exotics finish is more likely for Miraculous Miss.  Honorable mentions in the Acorn are Ermine, Wonder Lady Anne L, Bushfire, and Last Romance.

The Grade 1 Manhattan Handicap is a 1 1/4 mile route on the inner turf course for 3-year-olds and up to be contested under handicap conditions for a purse of $400,000.  The Manhattan is host to a stellar field highlighted by defending champion Good Reward and runner-up Relaxed Gesture, Murray Memorial Handicap winner Grey Swallow, and the one-two finishers in the Churchill Downs Turf Classic, English Channel and Cacique.  We can eliminate last year's one-two finishers Good Reward and Relaxed Gesture from anything but exotics placings because the European imports Grey Swallow and Cacique are simply too strong, and they are both now acclimated to the weather conditions of the U. S.  Grey Swallow is a son of Champion Turf horse Daylami, and like Cacique, has competed well against the best turf talent in the world, including Bago, Gorella, Azamour, Starcraft, and Oratorio.  That's as good as it gets.  Sabre d'Argent is another in today's field that will challenge for the exotics, but Grey Swallow and Cacique stand tall in this field.
