Synopsis Arlington Park Race 4 |
| The 4th at Arlington Park is a one mile route on the
main course for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up Illinois State
breds to be run under first-level allowance conditions for a purse of
$29,000. Hot Shades has only five starts for trainer Christine
Janks and shows good promise with three in-the-money finishes. She has
been sprinting and looks to go longer today and should have success.
Flama Del Sol will show early speed and will try to get away from
Denouncer's Gal and control the pace. Summer Range is
competitive as a stalker at this level but rarely closes the deal. |

| The Gallorette is a 1 1/16 mile route on the grass course for
fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up to be contested under handicap
conditions for a purse of $100,000. A crowded field,
including many with superior turf pace, takes to the Pimlico grass course in the
Gallorette. If Laurafina wakes up from her temporary funk she
can win today. This daughter of Cozzene draws post position 4, a
big advantage, and already has a grade 3 victory (the F. A. Genter at
Calder) and a grade 3 second (the Sands Point at Belmont). Laurafina prefers
to stalk from near midpack and that is a perfect tactic for the
Gallorette this year. Amorama is probably the top mare in the
field in terms pure talent, but Bobby Frankel has not been able to get
her a win since the Grade 1 J. C. Mabee at Del Mar in July of 2005. Amorama has taken on a virtual who's who in distaff turf racing since
the J. C. Mabee, including Island Fashion, Intercontinental, Megahertz, Laurafina, and Wend. In the five tough races since the Mabee,
Amorama has two seconds, a third, and two fourths. Today she
breaks from post 12 so she is really is going to have to work for
position. My Typhoon, a daughter of Giant's Causeway trained by
Bill Mott and ridden by Edgar Prado, has notched four graded stakes
in-the-money finishes already and she did this in only nine overall starts. She is returning to the track after a six month freshening and she has
picked a tough spot, but she will be heard from. Art Fan
finished seventh in last year's Garollette and is back as an improved
mare, and she will fight for an exotics placing today.
Humoristic and Smart N Classy are talented mares in their own right
and are also exotics candidates today. Barbaro's trainer,
Michael Matz, saddles Zona who is a front runner hoping to ration her
speed today and hit the board.

| The Baltimore Breeders Cup Turf Sprint is a five furlong dash on
the turf course for 3-year-olds and up to be contested for a purse of
$100,000. Scott Lake saddles the potent pair (running under
separate interests) of Procreate and Southern Missile. Either
could take the Baltimore B. C. Turf. Procreate enters the third
race of his form cycle so the talented 8-year-old son of Mt. Livermore
will be on his "A" game. A lifetime winner of over $295,000
Procreate has several stakes notches in his belt and he will be there
at the end today. Southern Missile is not as accomplished as his
stablemate but he has made the most of his 12 overall starts with 4
wins, 3 seconds and 1 show. In turf sprints at five furlongs he
has a win in a second-level allowance and a second in an optional
claimer, both in very fast times. My Lord, Second In Command,
and Abbondanza are all solid closers looking to make noise in the
stretch, but Lake's pair will be tough to get by today. All Hail
Stormy, trained by Allen Jerkens, is quick out of the gate and is a
nice exotics threat.

| The Hirsch Jacobs is a six panel dash on the main course for
3-year-olds to be contested for a purse of $100,000. Songster is
the most talented colt in the Hirsch Jacobs. In his three
overall starts Songster has beaten every horse he has faced except for
Too Much Bling (winner of the Grade 3 Bay Shore) and Exclusive Quality
(winner of the Spectacular Bid). Albertrani trains and
Edgar Prado rides, and Songster will race over the Pimlico course for the
first time. Urban Guy (winner of the Mountain Valley at Oaklawn),
Pagan Moon (winner of the Maryland Stallion here at Pimlico),
Rainbowinthestorm (second in the Maryland Stallion after setting pace),
and My Dynomite (winner of a New York State bred allowance) are all very
fast and will all be gunning from the get-go. None of them is
likely to reach the wire first with Songster in the race. An
interesting play is Valid Brush, a son of Broad Brush and trained by
Richard Small, who also trained his daddy. Broad Brush is a
"Chef-de-Race" with an Intermediate-Classic designation, one of North
America's finest sires. Valid Brush has two wins in four starts.
He registered a fast closing third in the Maryland Stallion Stakes,
and more recently he won a first-level allowance. The key to
Valid Brush's chances lie in his patient stalking style, which will
serve him well in the Hirsch Jacobs. |

Ultimate Goal |
| The Sir Barton is a 1 1/16 mile route on the main course for
3-year-olds to be contested for a purse of $100,000. Ah
Day opted out of the Preakness to run in the Sir Barton and is a much
more comfortable fit here. The sire of Ah Day, Mailbu Moon, is a
half brother to Malibu Moonshine, a force on the Maryland circuit in
2005, wining the Federico Tesio, the Private Terms, and the Miracle
Wood that year. Ah Day simply controls a race from gate to wire
and he is a perfect fit for the Pimlico course, winning the Tesio here
four weeks ago. Ah Day has a serious challenger in Ultimate
Goal, though. With the big league connections of Winstar Farm, Todd
Pletcher, and Edgar Prado, Ultimate Goal has become a force in only
three overall starts. He broke his maiden in his second race, a maiden
special weight at Gulfstream, in impressive fashion and followed that
up with a strong first-level allowance win at Keeneland.
Ulrimate Goal is well suited for the Sir Barton, although Ah Day is
more experienced and boasts home field advantage here in Maryland.
Todd Pletcher also saddles High Cotton, winner of the Rushaway at
Turway (on Polytrack), and High Cotton should be competitive here.
Hoping for the pace to melt down will be Little Cliff , one
of Nick Zito's string which failed to qualify for the Kentucky Derby and is
still looking for his niche. Vegas Play, handled by Bud Delp,
one-time trainer of Spectacular
Bid, will try to invade the exotics but
will have a tough time at this level of competition.

Better Than Bonds |
| The Maryland Breeders Cup sprint handicap is a six furlong
sprint on the main course for 3-year-olds and up to be contested for a
purse of $200,000. As expected the field is absolutely
loaded with speed. Richard Dutrow, Jr. has Kazoo running the
best he has run in his life. Kazoo has earned more than $550,000
and nearly half of that was earned in 2005 and the first five months
of 2006. Kazoo exploded out of the gate to win the Grade 3
Toboggan at Aqueduct by four lengths and then narrowly missed in the
seven furlong Grade 2 B. C. Commonwealth at Keeneland (won by Sun
King) after setting all the fractions. The only question for
Kazoo and his connections is how long will the fairy tale go on?
Gaff is another hitting his stride, winning the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector
at Gulfstream in January before he made the long journey to Dubai to
race in the Golden Shaheen ($2 million purse) at six furlongs in which
he finished a respectable fifth in a field of thirteen.
With only twelve lifetime starts, Gaff has done a lot of globe
trotting (Ireland, U.S., Dubai) so there may be a case of jet lag to
overcome. Todd Pletcher saddles the New York bred Friendly Island,
another speed burner, recently second to 2:5 favorite Bordonaro in the
Count Fleet at Oaklawn Park. Friendly Island finished a close up
third to Gaff in the Mr. Prospector and is a big threat today.
Better Than Bonds has the best chance of the closers
but he will have to work hard to overcome the Pimlico speed bias. As far
as handicap weight assignments go, Kazoo
must contend with the high weight of 120 pounds, while Better Than
Bonds gets in at a comfortable 115 pounds. |

Artie Schiller |
| The Grade 2 Comp USA is a 1 1/8 mile route on the turf
course for 3-year-olds and up to be contested for a purse of $250,000.
Artie Schiller cemented his position as the preeminent U. S. miler
with a victory in the Breeders Cup Mile in 2005. After a
well deserved freshening, though, Artie was nipped at the wire by
Miesque Approval in the Grade 2 Markers Mile at Keeneland at odds of
1:2 (ouch). Still, with 10 wins, 5 seconds, and 1 third in 17
overall turf starts against top U. S. competition, Artie Schiller
deserves favoritism and he likes the Pimlico grass course. Rebel Rebel
is a viable alternative should Artie fail to run his race. Rebel
Rebel is fresh off a strong second to Drum Major in the Lure at Gulfstream and he
is finally beginning to fulfill his
great promise. He has been in the U. S. for about one year now and is
starting to run like he means it. Edgar Prado is up, the
weight assignment is 118 compared to 124 for Artie, the talented
Richard Dutrow, Jr. trains Rebel Rebel, and his stalking style suits
Pimlico to a tee. Among the closers, Dreadnaught and Better Talk
Now are the most dangerous, but the Pimlico turf course is not
particularly kind to closers.

| The Schaefer is a 1 1/8 mile route on the main course for
3-year-olds and up to be contested under handicap conditions for a
purse of $100,000. The presence of one-time Kentucky Derby
winner Funny Cide is going to complicate the pace, although Funny Cide
looks more like an exotics horse today. Water Cannon and
Master Command will share pace setting duties with Funny Cide. Master Command , a son of A. P. Indy trained by Todd
Pletcher, has only seven overall starts but he's done well, winning three in a row before a
pretty good fourth in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap. Master
Command looks good here but he would have looked better without Funny
Cide in the race. The two closers Play Bingo and Andromeda's
Hero will benefit from Funny Cide's presence, and
Edgar Prado gets the mount on Andromeda's Hero, a positive sign.
Among the contenders, Play Bingo gets the best weight break, getting
in at 115 pounds. |

The Grade 1 Preakness Stakes is a 1 3/16 mile route on the main
course for 3-year-olds to be contested for a purse of $1,000,000
added. It's looking more and more like the second jewel of the
Triple Crown will be run under sunny skies. Rain would have
complicated the pace which is already going to be fierce. We
have provided a summary of the pedigree and performance updates for
all the Preakness contenders.

The best horses in the Preakness are front runners or close-up
stalkers. This will make for an exciting race with a lot of
bumping and grinding on the turns. The top contenders are
Barbaro, Brother Derek, Sweetnorthernsaint, and Bernardini, and all
possess powerful close-up stalking styles, with Sweetnorthernsaint
more of a pure stalker (stays back further). Right behind them
in talent are Like Now, Diabolical, and Greeley's Legacy.
Finally, Platinum Couple and Hemingway's Key look like they're in too
deep. By the time the close-up stalkers sort things out, Barbaro,
Brother Derek and Sweetnorthernsaint will all be rolling, Like
Now, Bernardini, and Diabolical may be the ones they have to catch.
Bernardini may stay on, and Diabolical will not, while Like Now
probably will not. I believe Like Now will be in the thick of it
until deep stretch and probably won't hold on for a piece, and
Greeley's Legacy has a chance to get a piece by saving ground and
closing late. The winner will come from the threesome of Barbaro,
Brother Derek, and Sweeetnorthernsaint. Greeley's Legacy would
be the wild card that could invade the exacta, though, as George
Weaver is a highly talented trainer and he has had plenty of time to
prepare Greeley's Legacy for a top effort. |
